Manager traits

Empathy

As a leader you need to be approachable. Have a low threshold for people to come to you with problems. Listen actively. Empathy does not mean sympathy: you can still disagree.

Clarity

As a leader, you need strive for utmost clarity at the top. Write full sentences. Speak clearly.

Think in "1,2,3". Set goals, plan, follow up. Repeat yourself as often as needed.

Proactive stance

As a leader, you need to think three steps ahead. You need to mostly rely on yourself to plan and execute work. Don't react to circumstance, but be ahead of them. Don't wait for someone to mail you back: actively chase them.

Mentorship & coaching

As a leader, others look at you for insights and decision making. You need to have deep expertise in at least one part of your function (design, marketing, engineering etc.) that is indisputable.

On the flip side, you need to be able to lift up people to take ownership; ask the right questions so people become experts themselves.
