👋 Stay interviews are a tool to keep your high performing team members by gauging why they stay, and why they might not.
How to have a stay conversation
👨👨👧👦 Who to have them with
In Performance Snapshots, you are asked ‘if this person got a job elsewhere I would…’
Have a stay conversation if you choose:
- 😱 Do everything I could to keep them. We'd be in trouble, OR
- 😰 Convince them to stay. They'd be difficult to replace.
📅 When to have them
👉🏽 Have a stay conversation with them regularly
- We recommend having a stay conversation at least once a quarter with your top performers.
- Leave at least 1 hour for the conversation so there’s time to unpick what you hear.

💡 Stay conversations don’t always need to be a separate 121 - you could include specific questions in a regular check in.

🚨 Watch outs
If you hear something that would keep a team member e.g. “a £10,000 pay increase”
- Do not make any guarantees that you can’t commit to.
- Instead, thank them for sharing the information with you and that you’ll keep it in mind for the future.
