What is documentation?

<aside> ๐Ÿ“Ž Documentation refers to anything written down in a place that other people can read, learn from, and further build upon. Also known as writing stuff down.

When do I need to document?

<aside> ๐Ÿ“ข Documentation is maintained by departments or individuals as needed, with some knowledge bases managed by large teams. Team leaders or project managers will determine custodial relationships as needed.

What does โ€œsingle source of truthโ€ (SSoT) mean?

<aside> ๐Ÿ”‘ There are many places to store documentation (Google, Notion, Zendesk, Remote platform, etc). **Single Source of Truth or SSoT refers to the designation of one system as the primary location for our data. In our case, the Single Source of Truth is our Notion workspace.

Please note that though other software may offer the same features, weโ€™ve settled on Notion as the SSoT for documentation.

Who owns documentation?

<aside> ๐Ÿ”’ Page owners ensure content is accurate and part of the current workflow (verification). Most pages in Notion will have an owner listed within the wiki header of the page.

Otherwise:

  1. Documentation is ultimately owned by the Department/SMEs where it resides. Page owners may be assigned/reassigned over time.
  2. Notion page Owners will receive a message when/if a page goes out of Verification.
  3. Those empowered to edit may edit.
  4. If you are not empowered to edit, but find an error/omission, let the owners know and they will fix. </aside>
